***Unit 1***

 

Unit 1 Weeks 1 & 2

    • admires - looks up to something or someone very highly.
    • classmate - a person who is in the same class at school.
    • community - a group of people who live in a certain area.
    • contribute - to supply, give, or bring something about.
    • practicing - doing something over and over to gain skill.
    • pronounce - to speak or say the sound of a letter or word. 
    • scared - to be afraid of something.
    • tumbled - to have suddenly fallen in a helpless way.

 

 

Unit 1 Weeks 3 & 4

    • celebrate - you do something special
    • courage - bravery in a difficult situation
    • disappointment - a person is sad because something is not as good as expected.
    • precious - it is very valuable to you.
    • pride -a feeling of satisfaction in something you have done.
    • remind - you make that person remember something.
    • symbols - to represent ideas or objects.
    • tradition - something that has been done for a long time.  

 

 

Unit 1 Week 5

    • landmark - an important building, large object, or place.
    • carved - cut into a piece or shape.
    • clues - hints that help someone find something or solve a mystery.
    • grand - great, large, or magnificent.
    • massive - extremely large or heavy.
    • monument - a building, statue, or object that honors a person or event.
    • national - a characteristic of or has to do with a nation or its government.
    • traces - small bits or signs left behind that show something was there.  

 

 

 

 

***Unit 2***

 

Unit 2 Weeks 1 & 2

    • announced - something you told people about.
    • candidates - the people seeking an office or honor.
    • convince - cause someone to believe or do something.
    • decisions - make choices.
    • elect - choose by voting.
    • estimate - to guess an amount.
    • government - local community and laws.
    • independent - to do things for yourself.  

 

 

Unit 2 Weeks 3 & 4

    • arrived - got where you were going. 
    • immigrated - came to a new country to live. 
    • inspected - looked at something closely and carefully. 
    • moment - a very short amount of time. 
    • opportunity - a chance for good things. 
    • photographs - pictures taken with a camera.
    • valuable - worth lots of money.
    • whispered - spoken in a very quiet voice.  

 

 

Unit 2 Week 5

    • bounce - to spring back after hitting something.
    • imagine - to picture it in your mind.
    • inventor - a person who creates something for the first time.
    • observer - someone who watches something.
    • alliteration - occurs when several words or syllables in a row start with the same sound.
    • free verse - a poem where lines do not need to rhyme.
    • limerick - a funny poem of five lines with a specific rhyme pattern.
    • rhyme - where words end with the same sound.

 

  

 

 

***Unit 3***

 

Unit 3 Weeks 1 & 2

    • amount - how much of that thing.
    • astronomy - the study of the stars, planets, and other outer space objects.
    • globe - a round model of the world or Earth.
    • solar system - includes Earth and the other planets that orbit the Sun.
    • support - you provide what they need.
    • surface - the outside of something.
    • temperature - to tell how hot or cold it is.
    • warmth - state of being warm in temperature or feeling. 

 

 

Unit 3 Weeks 3 & 4

    • disbelief - you do not believe something.
    • dismay - to feel upset because of shock or surprise.
    • fabulous - amazing. 
    • features - things that are noticeable about something. 
    • offered - you are presented with something that you can accept or turn down. 
    • splendid - very beautiful or magnificent.
    • unique - the only one of its kind. 
    • watchful - to watch closely and carefully. 

 

 

Unit 3 Week 5

    • agreeable - be pleasant or ready to agree with something.
    • appreciate - to admire highly or to be grateful for.
    • boomed - to have grown suddenly
    • descendants - people who come from a particular ancestor or group of ancestors.
    • population - the number of people who live in a certain region or country.
    • resources - sources of aid or support that may be drawn upon when needed.
    • transportation - the method or means of carrying or moving something from one place to another.
    • vehicles - means of transporting goods or people.  

 

 

 

 

***Unit 4***

 

Unit 4 Weeks 1 & 2

    • achievement - something you worked hard to finish or learn.
    • apologized - said you were sorry.
    • attention - you watch, listen, or concentrate on it.
    • audience - a group of people gathered to hear or see something. 
    • confidence - you have trust or faith in something or someone. 
    • embarrassed - you feel shy, uncomfortable, or ashamed. 
    • realized - you became fully aware of it. 
    • talents - natural abilities or skills.  

 

 

Unit 4 Weeks 3 & 4

    • alert - to give a warning or signal.
    • competition - a situation in which people or animals are trying to be more successful than others.
    • environment - the place that surrounds a living thing and affects its survival.
    • excellent - very good.
    • prefer - to like something better than another thing.
    • protection - when something is kept safe.
    • related - to belong to the same family.
    • shelter - something that protects or covers something else.  

 

 

Unit 4 Week 5

    • adventurous - willing to risk danger in order to have exciting or unusual experiences. 
    • courageous - very brave.
    • extremely - very.
    • weird - strange or unusual.
    • free verse - a form of poetry that does not have a regular pattern of rhyme and rhythm.
    • narrative poem - poem that tells a story.
    • repetition - words or phrases in a poem are repeated for effect. 
    • rhyme - to end with the same sound.  

 

 

 

 

***Unit 5***

 

Unit 5 Weeks 1 & 2

    • citizenship - the position of belonging to a country with rights and responsibilities.
    • continued - goes on without stopping.
    • daring - courageous and bold.
    • horrified - filled with great fear or horror.
    • participate - you join with others or take part in something.
    • proposed - to have suggested something to others for their consideration.
    • unfairness - the state of not being honest or fair. 
    • waver - to pause when being unsure.

 

 

Unit 5 Weeks 3 & 4

    • admit - you confess to it.
    • barter - trade things for other things without using money.
    • considered - you thought about it carefully before making a decision.
    • creation - something you made.
    • humble - not big or important.
    • magnificent - very beautiful and grand.
    • payment - an amount you paid for something.
    • reluctantly - to do it unwillingly or with hesitation. 

 

 

Unit 5 Week 5

    • energy - being able to be active; power.
    • natural - made by nature, without any care from humans.
    • pollution - the act of spoiling something or making it impure.
    • produce - means to make it or show it.
    • renewable - able to be created again.
    • replace - you find something else to take its place.
    • sources - forces that bring something about or cause it to exist.
    • traditional - describes a custom or belief that is handed down from generation to generation. 

 

 

***Unit 6***

 

Unit 6 Weeks 1 & 2

    • communicated - gave them information or ideas.
    • essential - very important or necessary.
    • goal - something a person wants and tries to get or become.
    • motivated - has a reason for doing something.
    • professional - requires special education.
    • research - the careful study of a topic to find and learn facts.
    • serious - important. 
    • specialist - knows a great deal about something. 
 
 

Unit 6 Weeks 3 & 4

    • alarmed - afraid or frightened.
    • anguish - great suffering of the mind or agony.
    • necessary - needs to be done, had, or used.
    • obsessed - you think about one thing all the time and nothing else.
    • possess - you have or own it.
    • reward - something given or received in return for something done.
    • treasure - can be money, jewels, or anything else that is valuable.
    • wealth - having a lot of money or valuable things. 
 
 
 

Unit 6 Week 5

    • entertainment - something that interests and amuses a person.
    • humorous - funny and makes people laugh.
    • ridiculous - very silly or foolish.
    • slithered - slid or glided like a snake.
    • narrative poem - a poem that tells a story.
    • rhyme - end in the same sound.
    • rhythm - a regular pattern of sounds that is repeated.
    • stanza - a group of lines arranged in a pattern of rhyme or rhythm.
